Costa Rica King of Dirt Video

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Ricardo shares his impressions of his trip to Costa Rica.

Ricardo:

Even being bilingual and traveling to a country where Spanish is the current language…I still learned so many new  things from this trip! I got to see how different Costa Rica is compared to the United States. I never realized how privileged we are to have the many things we have at home. It was interesting to see how even some words in Spanish are used and spoken in the U.S. have a completely different meaning in Costa Rica.

The sport of BMX is also changing lives of kids over there. BMX is becoming even more main stream, and it is really helping kids have hope for a better future. They are staying out of trouble and are building a career from riding their bikes.
This trip to Costa Rica showed me that being a professional BMX rider can offer an unbelievable amount of opportunity. I got to see so much history South America has to offer and meet tons of new friends!
The city of Cartago hosted the 7th annual King of Dirt Competition where people came from Central and South America to see the pro riders hit the dirt. Some even traveled 12 hours on little money just to make it to the comp. The dedication of the athletes is so strong that some riders even cracked their bike frames, but they still competed. That’s because KOD is the biggest comp of the year for them and they have been practicing day in and day out.

Mother nature was not on our side by giving us a steady 25 MPH wind. However, that didn’t stop the riders from wanting to show off tricks they have been working on all year.

I feel so lucky and honored to win the title of Latin America King of Dirt. While I was in South America I also got to show off my dirt jump building skills. The best part of the trip was getting to spend some time with the future BMX athletes of the world. These kids were so inspirational to me. They also told me how I helped them start riding and how they had always dreamed of riding with me. I was so happy I could make some of their dreams come true. Thanks to everyone for making memories that money can’t buy.

Great TSG results at Big in Bavaria

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Top 3 Mountainbike at Big in Bavaria 2010 price giving bmx at Big In Bavaria 2010 - Markus Hampl 2 podiums and more at the Big in Bavaria dirt contest in Munich last weekend. In mountain bike dirt Sam Pilgrim  got 2nd, Amir Kabbani 5th and our ambassador Simon Kirchmann, who qualified through Go Big Or Go Home for the pro event, ended up on the 14th place. BMX saw Markus Hampl on the 3rd place followed by Ricardo Laguna (4) and Patrick Guimez (5).

The weather conditions at the BIKE EXPO trade show in Munich didn’t make it easy for the riders: The first training day on Thursday was sunny, but Friday and Saturday were rained out. So the whole comp had to be rescheduled to Sunday.

The mountain bike riders were the first ones to go big on the 150 meters long dirt line in the early afternoon.

Swedish young gun Martin Soderstrom landed his tricks super clean. In his best run he showed a tailwhip at the start tower step down, a huge 360 table top, a double tailwhip, another 360 and a 360-double tailwhip. But guess who was his strongest competitor. Of course, it was TSG`s Sam Pilgrim. Sam and Martin had a lot of trick battles this season and Sam had only a 1,25 points gap to winner Martin Soderstrom. Pilgrim showed 360’s at the step-down, 360 x-ups, backflip no handers and as well as a 360 double tailwhip.

Another big highlight was new TSG ambassador Bienvenido Alba’s front flip from the start step down, which was landed well but a tiny bit overshot, so he had no speed left for the upcoming jump. So the Spanish rookie that is famous for his frontflip combos ended only 21st place.

The prize ceremony was very traditional in a Bavarian way: The winner got a 30 liters beer keg, the second a spigot and the third a hammer. A few minutes of teamwork later, the men on the podium were able to celebrate their success with a zip of fresh and cold beer.

After the 26” class, everybody was anxious for the upcoming BMX finals and the hottest tricks on 20” bikes: Australian Dane Searls, who is well known as an airtime lover, went crazy on the super-sized doubles of the BIG IN BAVARIA dirt line and showed tricks like 360 superman seatgrap indian airs or a super nice downside whip to tailwhip. Second place went to Ben Hennon from the United Kingdom. The German BMX legend and TSG rider Markus Hampl rocked the line with opposite 360 combos, flipwhips and 360 super seaters, so he finished with a great third place in front of TSG`s Ricardo Laguna and Patrick Guimez.

Congratulations!
